Null is null or not an object

Has anyone else experianced this? Is this just me being a muppet and not understanding how to use the control correctly? The map control was within an update panel, this was causing all the problems it seems which is understandable.

Removing the map from within the content template fixed all the problems, hope this helps anyone else who happens to be as much of a fool as me.
