Vista dos memory
Programs are loaded to this memory range. The available free memory can be lower as some drivers have to leave a part of their code in memory to handle e. By default such drivers are placed in conventional memory. The upper memory area UMA is memory in the range between kb and 1 Mb. By default there is no RAM in this range as it is reserved for use with hardware that is able to map own memory to this range.
Additional hardware like mass storage controllers, network adapters It has to be loaded in config. If no contiguous free Upper Memory Block is available the driver will be loaded to Conventional Memory. Since UMA memory is managed in blocks the amount of free Upper Memory is usually larger than the largest contiguous free block.
SYS in config. Directly after an XMS driver is loaded in config. Expanded Memory can be either memory on an memory expansion card or a part of the main memory. The specification describes that this memory can be used by mapping a 64 kB large part to the Upper Memory Area between kB and 1 Mb. The latest EMS 4. EXE that has to be loaded in config. The Extended Memory Specification XMS describes an application interface that allows to copy memory between conventional and extended memory.
Extended Memory is all main memory beyond 1 Mb. SYS that has to be loaded as first driver in config. It did help to change the expanded memory in the command. But when i try to see the expanded memory by typing mem at command prompt.
Am i missing something? I am in the same situation as you. I have a DOS application that requires expanded memory or extended memory in order to run or to load its datafile to be accurate.
Have you or anyone else found a solution to running DOS applications with expanded memory in Windows Vista? Thanks for your feedback on this. Using Virtual PC is not an ideal solution, both from performance, security, and ease of use points of view.
Often times the users of these older DOS applications--that many businesses still rely upon--are not as experienced with Windows. Using Virtual PC involves many more "moving parts" which means more ways something can go wrong. I would really look forward to an authoritive technical answer from Microsoft whether using Expanded Memory in DOS applications will be supported on Windows Vista. If not, then why are there settings in place that lead us to believe Expanded memory is supported?
Nice try, Matthew, but it doesn't quite work as you said. But it seems you must be close. Here's what happened. Everything you said, above worked exactly as you said, but it turns out I didn't need to do any of the explorer launching stuff, as I can already edit the properties of "command.
The problem is, when I then run command. Unfortunately, I still can't edit this file even from your "elevated" explorer. It says "Access is denied" if I try, exactly the same as if I try to edit it from my administrator account normally.
So, there must be some level higher than "administrator" which will let you edit a system file in the windows directory. Does anyone know how to do this? I was able to change ownership of it, and give myself write permission, but that didn't help.
Maybe booting into safe mode will help, but I have too many program open right now to try that. I'll see later. Ask a question. Quick access.
