A strong background in dance is essential. Students should demonstrate concentrated study in a classic, contemporary, or world dance form and some experience in at least one other dance style or a body-mind modality such as yoga.

Proficiency in basic elements of dance, such as improvisation, choreography, and teaching, is also preferred. Interest and experience in working with and helping others are also important. Applicants should be self-reflective and respectful of individual differences, with a commitment to working as a therapist. Advanced level DMTs also provide services in private practice.

Students are advised to consult their state credentialing requirements for specific information. The profession is positioned to meet an increasing interest in mind-body approaches to mental and physical health that have emerged in health profession circles and in the general public.

Upon graduation, students go on to work in schools, early intervention programs, community mental health, inpatient psychiatric, medical, social service, and wellness settings. Students also pioneer new frontiers in therapy application. Be advised, however, that licensure requirements vary widely from state to state, and may change at any time.

Therefore, if you are or will be interested in counseling licensure in the future, you are strongly advised to access and check the requirements for any state s in which you plan to work and practice. It is the student's responsibility to know and understand the requirements for any type of future licensure. Students learn to apply the Laban Movement Analysis LMA to the evaluation of individual and group functioning and to the design of therapy interventions.

The program also recognizes the importance of the therapist's function on a treatment team and fosters students' abilities to communicate valuable knowledge that may not be available to the team through strictly verbal treatment approaches. Group Process in Counseling and Expressive Therapies Students will develop a theoretical and embodied understanding of group process and dynamics, theory, skill, and approaches. Assessment Students will gain knowledge and skills in understanding and utilizing formal assessment instruments and information gathering techniques, used in case conceptualization, treatment planning.

Research and Program Evaluation Students will develop the ability to locate, read, critique, and evaluate research to inform clinical practice. Psycho-diagnostics and Treatment Students will gain an understanding of the broad spectrum of psychopathology and diagnostic criteria utilized in the current DSM 5 and ICD 10 to inform ethical clinical practice and evaluation within a diverse context.

Trauma and Crisis Intervention Students will demonstrate trauma-informed skills within clinical practice, including knowledge of crisis intervention, and risk and suicide assessment.
